What is causing my groin pain?

Groin pain is a complex issue that is commonly found in athletes playing ice hockey and football codes (soccer, AFL, Gaelic). This complexity is party due to the many structures in the groin region, but also because of abnormal findings on MRI in otherwise healthy athletes, which can muddy the waters in terms of identifying what is actually causing the pain in those with injury.

In 2014, experts held a conference in order to come up with a classification on types of groin pain. These are:

  • Adductor-related groin pain

  • Iliopsoas-related groin pain

  • Inguinal-related groin pain

  • Pubic-related groin pain

It is also possible for your groin pain to be coming from the hip joint, which is classified separately.
