Do I need surgery for my ACL to heal?

It has long been thought that if you have a full thickness tear of your Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) you require surgery to repair it, but in recent years this concept has been challenged. Research has been recently directed at monitoring the healing process of the ACL using MRI and the results have been very interesting. Although there are is conflicting evidence on the proportion of ACL injuries that will heal without the need for surgery it has been proven that many of them will in fact heal, even if they are full thickness tears.

So the evidence continues to point towards managing acute ACL injuries for a period of time with a structured rehabilitation program before turning down the surgical pathway. If you would like more information on this topic or have recently injured your ACL and want to know the best pathway book in to see one of our friendly and experienced physiotherapists.
