Achilles Tendinopathy
One of the most common overuse injuries, especially in runners, Achilles Tendinopathy (AT) refers to a combination of pathological changes affecting the Achilles Tendon usually due to overuse and excessive chronic stress upon the tendon. This condition is usually classified on a continuum of three stages.
Three stages are as follows:
Reactive tendinopathy
Tendon disrepair
Degenerative tendinopathy
So how do we prevent this? Simply, a lot of it comes down to load management. Too much load (walking, running, jumping etc.) too quickly, can overload the tendon and cause pain. Reducing the load temporarily to allow the tendon to settle is needed initially, but after it settles, how do we get back to the things we enjoy?
Two different studies looked into defecits in runners with achilles tendinopathy. The first found that runners without AT were able to to achieve 1.5x Bodyweight (BW) for 6 rep max (RM) on a seated calf raise.
The second study showed runners without AT were able to produce 2x BW in force from their calf in isokinetic testing.
If you are suffering from Achilles Tendinopathy, it is likely there will be a strength deficit in the calf. If this is the case, come in and see one of our Physiotherapists for a thorough assessment and management plan. To book an appointment call 9245 7007 or send an email to admin@horizonphysio.com.au
